Welcome to Caterwauling With Kristen!
CWK is a quirky, educational series on birds and my best take imitating the sounds they make! Each episode features an interview with someone super cool in the birding/ornithology world, fun facts about a specific bird, and my best take imitating that bird's call.
And just who am I? Well, I'm still figuring that one out, but so far as I know, I'm Kristen Englenz: an East Nashville-based singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, artist, 2009 bird call imitation champion, and host/creator of this podcast Caterwauling With Kristen (CWK).
I’ve been fascinated by birds my whole life. They’re our first musicians. Our neighbors gifted with the superpower of flight. In fact I was so fascinated, in the sincerest form of flattery, I started to mimic their calls, and in 2009 won an international bird call imitation contest in Decatur, GA.
Skip forward to 2018, I needed some levity in my life. I read an article about songbird population decline. The result was the birth of this series. I wanted to bring some joy to people. To ignite that excitement with life that comes from curiosity and learning. And to make people familiar with the birds around them, as I believe: once something becomes familiar, it becomes important. We protect what's important to us. I'm hoping to familiarize people with our feathered neighbors so that we can ensure a future in which a symphony of bird songs remains in the soundtrack of everyday life.
What the heck is “caterwauling” you ask? It’s basically a harsh noisy sound! There’s a call that Barred Owls make which is a caterwaul. This is one of my favorite birds which keeps showing up in my life in close encounters, and happens to be the call that won the 2009 contest. Hence Caterwauling With Kristen!
I hope this podcast brings some light into your life.
